The Siegels' collection was acquired under the guidance of Lawrence Salander of Salander-O'Reilly Gallery in New York in the late 1980s. Aharon Gluska (born 1951) is an Israeli–American painter. Gluska was born in 1951 in Hadera, Israel. He studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris and Avni Institute of Fine Arts in Tel Aviv. Grants Gluska received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Jackson Pollock- Lee Krasner Foundation. Awards Gluska was one of two winners along with Moshe Kupferman, of the 1996 Zussman Prize for artists dealing with the Holocaust, from the Yad Vashem museum, for his paintings of prisoners at Auschwitz based on photographs of them taken by their Nazi guards. This work takes its cues from Ilya Bolotowsky and Piet Mondrian. A fine example of 1970's hard edged geometric abstraction. Artist, painter & master photographer Jonathan Singer was born in 1948. As a young man, Singer, a native New Yorker took art classes at the Museum of Modern Ar. As the protégé of Ilya Bolotowski, the painter (a member of "The Ten," a group that included Louis Schanker, Adolph Gottlieb, Mark Rothko, and Joseph Solman), Singer dreamed of becoming an artist, but his Jewish mother got her wish and Singer became a doctor instead but always kept a hand in the realm of art and photography. Life in Nature Canvas measures 31.5 X 39.5 (I believe this is oil it might also be acrylic.) Hand signed recto and signed and titled verso. Calman Shemi, sculptor and painter, was born in Argentina in 1939. A graduate of the School of Sculpture and Ceramics in Mendoza, he studied under the Italian-Argentinean sculptor Libero Badii whom he credits with putting him on the right path. “He taught me principals, not only related to sculpture, but human and philosophic principals. Shemi also carefully studied the work of such masters as Picasso, Caravaggio, Frank Stella and Matisse. “From each one of these great artists I learned something from observing them,” he says. In 1961, at the age of 20, Shemi immigrated to Israel and joined Kibbutz Carmia of which he was a member for twenty years. There he worked in agriculture and also as a sculptor working with wood and clay. Several of his large-scale fiberglass and polyester projects are situated in public buildings. He was a student of German-Israeli sculptor Rudi Lehmann, a pioneer of the artistic movement known as “Canaanism.” Canaanite art was an effort to create a direct relationship with the land, bypassing historic Jewish connotations—hence the land’s primordial name is used. Canaanite works, with an emphasis on the inter-action of simple shapes, bear a deliberate resemblance to the sculpture and ritual art of early civilizations of the Middle East prior to Judaism, always with an eye to the fusion of man and the land itself. Though sculpture dominated his early years as an artist, in the mid ’70s Shemi developed the idea of the “soft painting” medium. Beginning with a color drawing done to scale, Shemi layers onto the drawing irregularly shaped pieces of variously textured and colored fabrics. Using a threadless 9,000-needle sewing machine, the fabrics are meshed to one another and to the background, resulting in vibrant carpet tapestry compositions infused with exuberant color and explosive movement. Prof. Richardson is the Chair of the Department of Art, he received his MFA degree from Washington University in St. Louis, and his BFA degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He joined the faculty at Maryland in 1978 and has maintained a professional focus on abstract painting and contemporary art theory. His work has been featured in 21 solo and over 100 group exhibitions in museums, galleries, and art centers in Washington, DC, New York, NY, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia, Missouri, Ohio, Georgia, Minnesota, Illinois, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and internationally in Brussels, Russia, Jordan and Algiers. His work is currently represented by G Fine Art in Washington DC. Past gallery affiliations include Fusebox in Washington DC, and Baumgartner Gallery in DC and NY. Richardson has received numerous grants and awards for his work, including five Maryland State Arts Council Visual Arts Fellowships. Commissioned artwork is permanently installed at Ronald Reagan National Airport and Reston Town Center in Virginia. His work is held in numerous public and corporate collections, including the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (DC), the Corcoran Gallery of Art (DC), the Ackland Art Center (NC), the U.S. Department of State (Algiers), the District of Columbia Town Hall, Prudential Life (NY), IBM Corporation (DC), Richmond Federal Reserve Bank (VA), Washington Post Corporation (DC), Northrop-Grumman (VA), and Reston Town Center (VA). The composition begins with a bright yellow background overlaid with intricate line work in graphite and colored pencil. Thousands of hand drawn lines serve as a backdrop for a bold geometric form in a dusty violet and dark gray gridded pattern that references "an imagined city grid", says the artist. The painting on paper is mounted to wood panel and complemented with a dark stained wood floater frame. It's in excellent condition and ready to hang as is. The surface is protected with four coats of an archival UV protective varnish. More about the work: Donise English emphasizes lines, grids, and fields of subtle color to evoke imagined places and invented structures. While precise lines and straight angles are often associated with themes in architecture and urban planning designs, English conveys a geometric motif guided by intuition rather than a ruler. Variations on grids retain flaws and unmistakable traces of the artists’ hand; her style of draftsmanship shies away from intellectualism and instead makes her compositions feel very personal. Each design is intensely intricate, incorporating gouache, acrylic, pen, graphite, ink and colored pencil. Artist Statement: My work is about the way visual diagrams present information that describes how something is made or the way it is. I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure.
